Homes along streets like N 42nd, N 44th, Densmore Avenue, and Sunnyside Avenue experience dramatically reduced sunlight exposure due to mature maples, oaks, and Douglas firs. North-facing walls may receive virtually no direct sun year-round, while west-facing elevations might see only brief afternoon light, meaning wood components remain damp far longer than on sun-exposed surfaces.
Wallingford developed primarily between 1900 and 1950, with the peak building period in the 1920s-1930s, showcasing Craftsman and Tudor Revival styles that dominated Seattle residential architecture during that era. Craftsman bungalows typically feature low-pitched roofs with wide overhangs, exposed rafter tails and knee braces, tapered columns supporting front porches, multi-pane double-hung windows, and extensive wood trim with simple honest detailing. Tudor Revival homes display steeply pitched roofs, decorative half-timbering either structural or applied, multi-pane casement windows in groupings, prominent chimneys with decorative brickwork, and asymmetrical facades with complex rooflines. The neighborhood also includes excellent examples of Colonial Revival, English Cottage, and early Ranch-style homes from the 1940s-1950s. Many homes retain their original architectural details because the neighborhood's stable ownership and community pride have discouraged destructive updates that stripped character from homes in other areas.
Without a drying cycle, wood does not get to recover between rain events, and everything downstream of that follows: paint loses adhesion from behind, moss establishes in the lap shadow, and the boards stay above the moisture threshold where decay fungi are active. The repair has to include getting air and light back to the wall where that is possible, or the new material inherits the same conditions.
The lower courses near the foundation are where we find the worst of it on this housing stock. Overgrown foundation planting holds moisture against the wall, splash-back keeps it topped up, and on a 1920s Craftsman there is nothing behind the siding to stop any of it. We clear and re-establish that zone as part of the work rather than replacing boards back into a hedge.
